Thinking about getting your new car? Think Mercedes. With years of experience meeting the customer’s needs from the first day, Mr. Benz made the first attempt at making traveling easy in the late 1870s. They have never looked back from having made sports cars that dominated the tracks and luxury cars bought by the rich and famous.
Choosing between the Mercedes C class and S class is truly hard as they are both extremely good choices. However, there are a few significant differences between the C and S classes. Here is a review of both cars to help you decide.
Mercedes C class
The Mercedes C-class is a small luxury car. The current 2021 model is part of the series that began in 2015. It comes in two variations: the Salon and Estate versions. Both versions are designed with your comfort in mind.
Body, interior, and cargo space
The 2021 C class salon looks similar to the 2020 model, especially from the side view, but with some changes around the door. However, it still has the sleek sporty look from the old models. The front of the car has changed and the headlights are thinner. On the AMG model, the grill is decorated with small Mercedes logos. This has given the car more attitude.
The bumper is black with air intake vents, and it comes with daylight driving lights. At the back, there is a noticeable change as well. The traditional rounded brake lights have been switched to more modern triangular lights. It comes fitted with two chrome exhaust tips. You also get new alloy wheels, ranging from 17-19 inches.
The interior is completely different from the older models. There was no compromise in the comfort as it is still sleek and comfortable. The dashboard has a sweeping design that joins up at the center with a massive 10–12-inch touchscreen “infotainment” system, depending on preference. There is only one row of buttons under the system, and the drivers’ display is separated.
The steering wheel is small and comfortable to handle with touch-sensitive buttons. The air vents have also been changed from the old design to the new square-shaped. There’s 30mm more headroom and 35mm more legroom in the back seats to help accommodate taller passengers.
The cargo space is manageable with storage of around 455 liters of space in the salon model and 490 liters of space in the estate version. The estate has more room and is a better choice for you if you like a spacious car. The estate comes fitted with a lift-back tailgate opening. To add more room, you can flip the rear seats down to reveal 1510 liters of space.
The infotainment system is central and better than the older models. It comes with the usual features like navigation, music, smartphone mirroring. Most of the non-driver options of the car can be controlled from this screen. It also gives an option to connect to your smart devices with a biometric locking system. Like most Mercedes cars, it also comes with the Mercedes personal assistant.
Engine, driver options, and wheels
The car comes in different variations. There are the four-cylinder engines that come in petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrids.
Petrol
- C180 – 1.5 liters 170 horsepower
- C200 – 1.5-liter 240 horsepower
Diesel
- C200 – 2.0liter engine at 164 horsepower
- C220 – 2.0liter engine at 200 horsepower
The car also comes with a driver assistance system that can accelerate, brake, and steer the car for you and also detect cars on the way. It also comes with a parking assistant and can apply the breaks when you’re about to run into anything parking. There are 3D surround cameras as well.
Mercedes S-class
The S-class is a big salon car used mostly as a chauffeur car; this is because of the long-wheelbase that makes it extremely comfortable at the back compared to the C-class model that is meant for self-driving.
Body, interior, and cargo
The exterior is elegantly designed with a combination of old Mercedes S-class features and new features. There’s a keen attention to detail with the brake lights with its new triangular design. The door handles also pop in and out to reduce wind resistance. A long crease runs just below the window, giving it a sporty feel. The grill in the front is a new feature with a different shape from the previous S-class designs with the logo at the center of the grill.
The interior is the most noticeable change as it’s completely different from any previous S-class models. It’s also very luxurious with a soft leather finish accompanied by wood trims. The square air vents come with wireless charging pads and USB-C charging spots. The in-car storage is also sufficient with the door bins able to hold 1-liter bottles. A LED light runs through the interior of the car with different colors for different functions.
The car has more room in the back than the previous models, with the back seat having two variations: the three- and two-seater versions, depending on preference. The two-seater version allows the reclining of the front passenger seat. There’s also the option of screens in the back with a removable tablet that helps control the screen while the seat is reclined.
There are also massage seats with ten different modes to increase comfort. The cargo space is 550 liters of storage with an electric tailgate and a shopping bag hook. However, if you get the two-seat version or the refrigerator fitted, the back seats don’t recline.
Engine, driver options, and wheels
The new Mercedes S-class comes fitted with rare wheel steering that helps to reduce the turning circle by at least 2 meters, making the big salon as maneuverable as a hunch back. The digital drivers’ display is a 10-inch high-definition touchscreen that can be controlled by the steering wheel buttons. It has both touch and press so you can change the views on the display as it has a 3D mode.
- S500 – 3.0-liter turbo petrol engine with 435 horsepower
- S350d – 2.9-liter turbo diesel engine with 286 horsepower
- S400d – 2.9-liter turbo diesel with 330 horsepower
- S580e – 3.0-liter turbo petrol + electric motor with a 510horse power and a 28hr kilowatt battery with a range of 64 miles.
Conclusion
These cars are both exceptional vehicles where speed meets class and comfort. It would be a hard choice to pick one over the other. However, there are key differences between them and you could pick your choice based on your needs. The S-class, however, is more luxurious than the C-class but the C-class is the more affordable one.
