- Highs Ultra-spacious inside, quiet and cushy ride, interior finery to match any luxury brand.
- Lows Sheer bulk makes maneuverability a challenge, powerful thirst for unleaded, lacks the visual charm of the original.
- Verdict Jeep's large luxury SUV gets it done with brute size and strength but with little connection to its classic namesake.
Overview
The Grand Wagoneer SUV, introduced in 2022, revived the nameplate of what has become Jeep's second-most-iconic vehicle after the WWII Jeep. How many T-shirts, hats, Christmas cards, and other ephemera have you seen adorned with an image of the classic, boxy, wood-sided Grand Wagoneer that went on sale as a 1963 model and lasted through the early Nineties? There's not much family resemblance between Grand Wagoneers old and new, though. Today's Grand Wagoneer is significantly grander in scale than its namesake. It's some two-and-a-half feet longer—three-and-a-half feet longer for the stretched L version. You could almost fit the old GW inside the new model; now there are three spacious rows of seating, making this the first three-row Jeep since the short-lived Commander. There's also a level of finery that's leagues beyond yesteryear's model, putting this Jeep on a par with other full-size luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Fuel economy hasn't advanced nearly as much, with the Grand Wagoneer exhibiting a powerful thirst despite ditching its big V-8 for a turbocharged inline-six. Towing capacity, though, is prodigious. If the GW's equally prodigious price tag is off-putting, know that the less fancy Jeep Wagoneer has the same size and capability but for considerably less coin.
Where This Vehicle Ranks
#7 in Best Large Luxury SUVsWhat's New for 2024?
For 2024, the Grand Wagoneer drops the Series II trim level, leaving the Series II Obsidian as the lone middle offering between the Series I and the Series III. The Obsidian gets a blackout exterior treatment, but one can add an Obsidian package to the top-spec Series III to get the same look. Stellantis’s Hurricane engine, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six that makes 510 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, is now standard on all Grand Wagoneer (and regular Wagoneer) models; previously it was in the L versions only. The 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 has been dropped.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer starts at $93,945 and goes up to $116,190 depending on the trim and options.
If you're shopping for value, you'd get the regular Wagoneer. If you're going Grand, you might as well go all-in and get the Series III. That trim nets you the full GW luxury experience, with the top-drawer stereo, walnut wood trim, the richest available leather, the front passenger screen, digital rearview mirror, suede headliner, and on and on. We'd skip the L version, though, as the regular Grand Wagoneer is already plenty spacious and plenty large.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Now standard on all Grand Wagoneer variants, the Hurricane 510-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six is more powerful and slightly more economical than the departed 6.4-liter V-8. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In our testing, the GWL reached 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. Jeep's top four-wheel-drive system, Quadra-Drive II, is standard here and includes a two-speed transfer case (with low range), hill-descent control, and an electronically locking rear differential. As with its domestic rivals, the Grand Wagoneer utilizes body-on-frame underpinnings, in this case derived from the Ram 1500 pickup truck. However, the Jeep features an independent rear suspension rather than the truck's solid rear axle, which gives the SUV a smoother ride and better handling than the Ram. The GW rides on air springs (they're optional on the regular Wagoneer) that can raise its ride height up to 3.6 inches or lower it by a half-inch. It also boasts 10 inches of ground clearance, up to two feet of water-fording capability, and a max tow rating of 9860 pounds. After driving the Grand Wagoneer, we appreciated its relaxed and refined ride on the highway; however, its pickup-truck structure contributes to a jiggly ride when pavement is less smooth. Likewise, the massive SUV isn't very agile in small spaces and suffers from notable body roll on curvy roads that is exacerbated by its light and vague steering feel.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The 2024 Grand Wagoneer, regular or L, is rated at 17 mpg combined, with estimates of 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The GWL exactly matched its EPA estimate on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen. For more information about the Grand Wagoneer's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Standard three-row seating for either seven or eight passengers doesn't begin to describe the Grand Wagoneer's interior, in which the third row is not only adult-sized but has an available power-reclining backrest and a skylight. A pair of second-row captain's chairs are standard, but a bench seat is available for maximum passenger capacity. Don't assume you need the L version; it's chief advantage over the already-huge standard model is additional cargo space behind the third row: 44 cubic feet rather than 27. Fold the rearmost seats in the L and you're looking at 89 cubic feet, for the standard GW it’s 71 cubes. Up front, there's real walnut or aluminum trim and screens, screens everywhere. The interior also boasts "Easter eggs" inspired by the original Grand Wagoneer, including an old-school two-spoke steering wheel and an "EST. 1963" inscription that appears on the edge of the dashboard when you open the door. Along with customizable ambient interior lighting, this grandest of Wagoneers offers a head-up display, a camera-fed rearview mirror, and a rear-seat monitoring system that displays a video feed onto the central touchscreen.

Infotainment and Connectivity
One of the most dazzling aspects of the Grand Wagoneer is its multifaceted infotainment system. The Jeep's dashboard is covered in screens. All models have digital instrumentation and a 12.0-inch center touchscreen. Below that sits a 10.3-inch touchscreen with controls for the HVAC system. The two upper trims have yet another 10.3-inch touchscreen for the front-seat passenger; it has redundant audio and navigation controls or can stream entertainment. Prepare to spend some serious driveway time learning your way around it all. Desirable standard features include a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB ports in all three rows. Second-row passengers are also treated to another 10.3-inch touchscreen between the captain's chairs; opting for the rear-seat entertainment system adds a pair of 10.1-inch touchscreens. Every Grand Wagoneer has a powerful McIntosh stereo, but the Series II Obsidian and Series III get a more powerful 1375-watt unit with 23 speakers.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Not only is the Grand Wagoneer fitted with a suite of standard driver-assistance technology, but the luxury SUV is also available with an equally wide array of additional assists. These include adaptive cruise control, a self-parking function, and night vision with pedestrian and animal detection. Although adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist is standard, Jeep does not offer true hands-off highway-driving tech such as Cadillac's Super Cruise or Lincoln's ActiveGlide. For more information about the Jeep's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
- Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Jeep currently offers a competitive albeit unremarkable limited and powertrain warranty. However, the company does give all models three years of free maintenance.
- Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years and unlimited miles
