In light of the new law handed down by the SCOTUS I feel compelled to make a few comments about what this should mean for us as Christians. This might sound as a bit of a shock to you, but I would argue that the issue of homosexuality is not the problem. If we want to change how our world views homosexuality. If we want to change how our world views marriage it is not going to be fixed by encouraging our senators and representatives to begin pushing for a constitutional amendment. (The reality is that amendment would be struck down as unconstitutional anyways.) I would argue that if you want to change the world view on this sexual immorality you need to stop teaching on the subject. Or at least, we need to stop leading with the subject. Homosexuality is not the issue. Homosexuality is not the reason why our marriages might suffer. Homosexuality is not the reason why the young people in this country have no regard for marriage. Homosexuality is not the reason why people cheat on their spouses. Homosexuality is not the reason for the high divorce rates in this country. The reason is actually given unto us in Rom. 1. Read the following passage. “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done(Rom. 1:21-28).” What caused the rise of homosexual behavior? It was the rejection of the Almighty. In the following verses Paul goes on to speak of other sins that were engaged in among the Gentiles. All of these sins were made possible because the Gentiles rejected God. Years ago I heard a lecture by Ken Ham that seems to best sum up our issues. I will do my best to summarize the lecture. He spoke of all these issues that plague our society. Abortion, divorce, promiscuity, drunkenness, homosexuality, lying, stealing, etc. He went on to say that we spend a lot of time arguing about why these things are wrong. Often times we hope to get the government to legislate these things (and in times past much of these issues were legislated). We spend countless hours talking about why these are sins (we point out scripture). All the while we are missing the bigger picture. While we battle over things like abortion and homosexuality it isn’t until we convince a person that God is and that he is a rewarder of those that diligently seek him (Heb. 11:6). The fact that God is our creator is the very foundation of morality. Why do we know murder is wrong? Because God tells us. Why do we know rape is wrong? Because God tells us. How do we know that modesty is? Because God tells us. How do we know marriage is between man and woman? Because God tells us. In fact, much of what we deem as morality is identified in the 1st book of the bible. The book of beginnings is not just about the beginning of creation, it is about the beginning of God’s revelation. It is about the beginning of knowing who God is and it is the beginning of knowing what is moral and what is immoral. I am not saying that we shouldn’t eventually deal with sin. It must be dealt with. However, the person you are trying to convince to repent of their ways won’t do it until they have come to know God. First help them understand that why they need to repent is not because they have sin in their life, but because there is a God in heaven that desires to be with his people. He so desires it that he sent his Son to die for us. He so desires it that he did not leave us to grope about in the darkness just guessing what is moral and what is not. He revealed plainly what his will is. And of course, the bible is that will.
